Peter Gabriel - Scratch My Back (2010)
You'll probably never see Peter Gabriel choose the easy path. Covers album are more often then not a quick and easy way to put out a new record. Not with Gabriel. This project took almost two years to be completed. Firstly because it is a song exchange program, with each artists covered agreeing to cover one of Gabriel's song in return. Secondly because Gabriel transformed each song so much that some of them are barely recognisable. Lastly because he decided to record each song only backed by an orchestra (no guitars, no drums). The result is, as always with Gabriel, fascinating and challenging, intense and deeply moving.

King Crimson - Thrak (1995)
King Crimson, the band of a hundred faces... The 90's line-up is a virtuosity monster (two drummers, two bass players, two guitarists) with an incredibly wide musical palette. More than ever, the music can shift from utter chaos to aerial grace within the blink of an eye. The album is also a mesmerizing synthesis of 30 years of musical exploration: from brutal instrumental pieces reminiscent of the Red album to experimental funk of the 80's, from carefully chiseled songs to wild improvisations, this is a great catalogue of King Crimson's music past and present, without ever sounding artificial or contrived.

Shearwater - Rook (2008)
Funny how progressive rock, after being reviled for so long, is creeping back to influence indie rock of the 21st century : plaintive yet powerful vocals with pompous lyrics, unexpected key changes, unconventionel instruments, a mix of influences that reminds as much of Radiohead and Talk-Talk than early Genesis and King Crimson. Still, the band has developped a very strong personnality. Rooks is a short album (35 min) that will challenge the listener at first but has enough great songs and catchy melodies to make sure he'll come back for more. Then, the true beauty of this record shall be revealed.

a-ha - Hunting High And Low (1985)
The massive success of the song Take On Me somehow eclipsed the qualities of this first album. This collection of songs written during the early years of the band clearly shows that they were still looking for their own musical style. But what the record lacks in cohesiveness, it makes up for in variety: from the new wave pop to darker and rockier songs, from simple synths arrangements to complex orchestral ones, it explores a lot of different horizons. Too bad the band never got past his 80's boys band image, because it was clear right from the start that the Norvegian trio had a few aces up their sleeves.
